Draupadi Murmu Sworn in as the 15th President of India

Draupadi Mumru assumes the highest office of India as the 15th President and the 1st tribal President of India.

New Delhi: The former Lieutenant Governor of Jharkhand Draupadi Murmu was sworn in as the 15th President of India followed by 21-guns salute on 25-July-2022, Monday after securing 64.03% of votes in Presidential election against her main rival Yashwant Sinha from Indian National Congress.

Draupadi Murmu took oath as the 2nd female and 1st tribal President of India. The Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana administered the oath of the President’s office to Murmu. She is the youngest President of India and was also born in the independent India after the partition of 1947.

After the swearing in ceremony of Draupadi Murmu, the Jharkhand’s governor seat was vacated and Ramesh Bais was sworn in as the 10th Governor of Jharkhand succeeding Draupadi Murmu. The Chief Justice of Jharkhand, Justice Ravi Ranjan administered the oath of the Governor’s office of Jharkhand.

President Mumru said some quotes in her Presidential speech –

–My election is proof of the fact that in India, the poor can dream and also fulfil those dreams.

–It is the power of India’s democracy that a girl born in a poor tribal home could reach the topmost constitutional post.

–I started my life journey from a small tribal village in Odisha. From the background I came from, it was like a dream for me to get elementary education. But despite many obstacles, my resolved remained strong and I became the first daughter of my village to go to college. I belong to the tribal society, and I have got the opportunity to become the President from the Ward Councillor. This is the greatness of India, the mother of democracy.

Murmu was born in a Santal Tribal family on June 20, 1958, in village Uparbeda of district Mayurbhanj. She started her carrier in 1994 as a teacher at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre. Her political career started as an MLA in between the year 2002 to 2009. Murmu also served as BJP state’s President from 2006 to 2009. She last served as the Lieutenant Governor of Jharkhand from the year 2015 to 2021.

She was also the 1st woman Governor of the state of Jharkhand and the 1st female tribal leader to serve for the same designation.
